Notes on half title: 1. What was the American Dilemma?; 2. Jan. 10, 1967 Congress's action against P. 21 years in Congress; 3. Supported Eisenhower. Underlinings: An American Dilemma. Powell left no systematic collection of papers for research. 1944 elected to Congress. Contradictions in American society between Creed and reality highlighted by white/black civil rights advocates. Not a Christian country; Christianity= instrument to perpetuate anti-Christian doctrines of segregation. Aim in race relations was not to be polite. How one responded to Powell reflected how one responded to the American Dilemma. Was his being black the reason for income tax problems? When congressional colleagues accused him of taking two beautiful staffers to Europe alone with him--one black, one white--asked about fuss, did they want him to take an all black staff? Kept third wife on congressional payroll after ceased working. Could have passed for white. 21 years in congress.
